Clarification on municipalities working the road

This bill only applies to cities who wish to work on the interstate system with a population under 10,000.

Public Acts No. 914 states:

SECTION 5. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 55-10-308, is amended by adding following sentence:

Provided, however, any municipality having a population of ten thousand (10,000) or less, according to the 2000 federal census of population or any subsequent such census, must exercise the authority conferred by this section in full compliance with rules promulgated by the commissioner of safety to regulate enforcement of §§ 55-8-1-101 - 55-8-180 and 55-10-101 - 55-10-310, on the portions of any highway designated and known as part of the national system of interstate and defense highways lying within the territorial limits of such municipalities.

The guidelines set forth by the MUNICIPAL COURT - RULES OF THE ROAD require the police department to get approval from the Department of Safety to police the interstates if the population is under 10,000. Packets are available and here is what you need to do:

Contact: Major Lee Chaffin

Phone: 615.251.5175

Fax: 615.532.1051

There is a dead period that will not end until April 29th and it appears that the Highway Patrol will be responsible for the interstates until you have submitted your request. Please contact Major Chaffin and he will take care of your request.
