This
bill only applies to cities who wish to work on the interstate
system with a population under 10,000.
Public
Acts No. 914 states:
SECTION
5. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 55-10-308, is amended by
adding following sentence:
Provided,
however, any municipality having a population of ten thousand
(10,000) or less, according to the 2000 federal census of population
or any subsequent such census, must exercise the authority conferred
by this section in full compliance with rules promulgated by
the commissioner of safety to regulate enforcement of §§
55-8-1-101 - 55-8-180 and 55-10-101 - 55-10-310, on the portions
of any highway designated and known as part of the national
system of interstate and defense highways lying within the territorial
limits of such municipalities.
The
guidelines set forth by the MUNICIPAL COURT - RULES OF THE ROAD
require the police department to get approval from the Department
of Safety to police the interstates if the population is under
10,000. Packets are available and here is what you need to do:

There
is a dead period that will not end until April 29th and it appears
that the Highway Patrol will be responsible for the interstates
until you have submitted your request. Please contact Major
Chaffin and he will take care of your request.
